Activities formally undertaken by the Adelaide Plans, Barossa Ranges, Mount Lofty Ranges and Fleurieu Animal and Plant Control Boards are now the responsibility of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board.
Within the region there are over 70 species of plants and animals that have been declared as pests because of the serious threat they pose to agriculture, the environment or to public safety, and have the potential to spread beyond their current range.
The Natural Resources Management Act, 2004, requires you to control declared plants on your property. The Board is responsible for the control of declared plants on roadsides, but the cost of this control is recovered from the adjoining landholder. You may carry out your own roadside control program for declared plants, but you must obtain permission from your local council before doing so.
The Board's Authorised Officers coordinate control programs for certain declared plants that have a high priority in the rural regions, and conduct regular inspections. If declared plants are detected on your property, you may be contacted by an Authorised Officer and requested to control the plants.
Our Authorised Officers provide a free consultancy on declared plant management. They can inspect your property to identify declared plant or other weed problems, advise on the declared plant regulations applicable to your area, recommend suitable control methods and develop management plans.

NRM Board assistance
To help you better manage pest plants and animals on your property the Board can assist in the following ways:
Weed identification -
Identification of weeds can be provided on your property or bring them into a Board office for identification.
Plant and animal control management plans -
Landholders can contact an advisor and ask for assistance to develop an individualised control program. The program will take into account the resources that are available to achieve the desired outcome and also your legislative responsibilities. In some instances an officer will contact a landholder suggesting that they should consider developing a management plan for a particular plant or animal problem.
Advice for specific pest control -
Advice is available for the control of foxes and rabbits
Poisons and chemical information -
• Careful suggestions and guidance in the selection of chemicals
• Our officers are authorised to supply poisoned bait in appropriate situations
Contractor information -
• a listing of the known weed control contractors which operate in the rural areas is available from the
Board’s officers
Hay check –
• Contact an advisor from the Board before purchasing hay so that it's declared plant status can be confirmed.
Declared plant protection -
• In some circumstances we can provide protection from declared plants impacting on you from adjoining landholdings.
