Project Summary The Deanery Community Landcare Group formed in 1994 in an effort to coordinate rehabilitation work on a section of Cox Creek and adjacent high value bushland near Bridgewater in the Adelaide Hills. The group’s main priorities were to:
- Remove exotic willows from the creek banks and to propagate and plant indigenous riparian plants in their place
- Remove substantial woody weeds from neighboring bushland know locally as Goat Hill and Appy Gully
- Ensure long term planning, coordination and sustainability of the project site
- Educate the local and extended community about a range of issues and practices associated with Landcare and Bushcare. The project site incorporates a popular section of the Heysen Trail, and a portion of Arbury Park Outdoor School, a statewide environmental educational service catering for several thousand students each year. Its accessibility and level of exposure to the public make this project site an ideal opportunity to showcase an integrated, partnership approach to restorative land management.

Success Stories • Removal of woody acacia from Goat Hill Bushcare Reserve
• Watercourse and riparian zone rehabilitation, principally willow removal from Cox Creek
• Cox Creek Bushland Regeneration Project – extending the existing Bushcare project and providing extensive educational signage

Project Summary • Stop the shooting of Little Corellas.
• Encourage sustainable management strategies to protect crops, move birds from townships and disperse their numbers over a wider area while respecting their needs.
• Research the Little Corella distribution, range, numbers, habitat, age span and breeding and feeding patterns to determine real status of "abundance" and needs.
• Encourage planting of suitable tree species in Onkaparinga and Alexandrina wards, to replace habitat loss due to land clearing, and support the Little Corella as one of our state's Native fauna.
• Promote the Little Corellas as an asset to eco-tourism on the Fleurieu Peninsula and other areas of South Australia.
• Educate the public on Little Corella behaviours and habitat needs and dispel the myths.
• Encourage the perception that our birds and animals are unique and valuable assets in an ecosystem in which we as humans - are only one part. We do not need to exclude other species of wildlife.
• Change Legislation relating to the protection of native birds. All Native fauna should be protected. "Abundance" is a relative term. Land clearance for farming and housing are the major causes of loss of habitat for native species and coupled with shooting, can lead to an abundant species become threatened or endangered!

Project Summary • FO(L)CC have been concerned for 10 years that there seems to be a problem with the silt load discharging out into the Gulf into the vicinity of Christie Beach and the Port Noarlunga Aquatic reserve system. The urban development in the Christie Creek catchment has not abated so there can be an expected increase in the base flow that will increase the current erosion.
• Observe the mechanisms put in place to protect a local watercourse
• The Port Noarlunga Aquatic reserve is in very close proximity to an urbanised catchment named Christie Creek. Which in turn is depositing very large amounts of silt into the marine environment.
• We had the first water Catchment plan in South Australia (prepared by BC Tonkin 1995)

Success Stories • The Port Noarlunga Aquatic reserve is in very close proximity to an urbanised catchment named Christie Creek. Which in turn is depositing very large amounts of silt into the marine environment.
• We had the first water Catchment plan in South Australia (prepared by BC Tonkin 1995)
Challenges We feel that through a combination of circumstances that Transport SA has not full filled its duty of care in relation to the Water Resources Act. It has not left the watercourse in good condition.

• The Park is home to the rare southern brown bandicoot and yellow-footed antechinus. The forest canopy is mostly messmate stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua) and brown stringybark (E. baxteri). The understory is diverse, but severe bushfires in 1980 and 1995 have affected the flora. Weeds are the main threat to the Park's flora diversity

  Activity Guide
Project Summary • Since our foundation in September 1990, we have planted several thousand trees - all indigenous to the area, removed miles of rusty old fencing, and waged a dedicated campaign against a variety of weeds, most notably: Broom, Gorse, Bone-seed, South African Daisy, Erica, Olives, Blackberry and the weed orchid Monodenia bracteata.
• Restoration of blackberry infested creeklines has also occupied much of our time. Several creek lines are in various stages of rehabilitation. They still contain vestiges of their original species and the natural regeneration of long dormant seed has been interesting to observe.
• Under the guidance of our patron, noted botanist Enid Robertson, we have followed the "Bradley principle" of working on the good areas of bush first, and keeping them free from weeds. We then gradually work out to the more degraded areas.

  Activity Guide
Project Summary • Removing exotic (weed) plant species.
• Revegetation with native species.
• Environmental education projects.
• Installation interpretive structures and materials to aid environmental education.
  Success Stories

• We have planted over 2500 trees in Stage 1, 2 & 3 over the past 3 years with help from the school kids of Hackham South Primary School.
• Successfully rallied the Onkaparinga Council for a Trash Rack to stop rubbish flooding down stream from the other side of Melsetter Roadway.
• Successfully rallied the Onkaparinga Council for a Green Waste Removal Bin, which is being provided shortly, to assist us with disposal of weeds, and exotic grasses etc.

  Funding Sources

We have just received small donation from the Open Market Committee of the Beach Road Sunday Market to assist in the purchase of resources to assist in the maintenance of the Hackham Creek project. These funds will help purchase fertiliser, bin bags, and some much needed equipment to assist volunteers in their activities.

We are also assisted by the Aberfoyle Park Office of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board’s Catchment Care Office who provide the materials and training necessary for the school to become involved in the project by propagating the local native plants we will need for revegetation.

Project Summary • The Hahndorf Landcare Group commenced work at the Karl Nitschke reserve on Hahndorf Creek in 1994 as part of an agreement with Mount Barker Council. The council was proposing to bituminise a carpark adjacent to the reserve and creek. This proposal concerned group members as they believed runoff from the planned carpark would enter and pollute nearby Hahndorf Creek.
• The group persuaded the council to use an unsealed carpark and agreed to assist the council in maintaining the reserve. At the time, the site was infested with exotic trees as well as woody and herbaceous weeds. Since 1995, the group has steadily removed these pest plants, and worked to replace them with local native species which they propagate themselves.
• In 2001 the group joined the Catchment Care Program and received a grant to boost their propagation efforts and to engage a contractor to remove some exotic trees. The Karl Nitschke reserve is now a fine example of a well executed riparian restoration in progress. There will be several more years of weed control and revegetation to come, but already the site is looking great.
• The Hahndorf Landcare group has also been a keen participant of Waterwatch for some years. In fact they are so enthusiastic about water monitoring that they have purchased their own testing equipment to enable them to monitor water quality at their site.

  Meeting Location Springhead School
  Activity Guide
Project Summary “Our vision is to provide leadership within the Charleston sub-catchment for the attainment of an integrated approach to the sustainable management of the landscape forming the defined area.”

The primary aim of the Group was to
• address the continuing degradation of the local creeks as a result of lack of native vegetation, exotic plant invasion and ongoing stock access.
• to protect what remnant vegetation that remains, buffer existing remnant vegetation through targeted revegetation, link remnants by revegetation corridors to create “stepping stones”, and to manage and protect threatened habitats.

The NSLCG has identified the need for a more strategic approach, to include a focus on a whole of landscape approach, sustainable agriculture and best practice farming. This will strengthen and encourage a collaborative approach between existing landowners and engage new landowners in sustainable agricultural practices.

  Success Stories Riparian areas
• 7kms fencing
• total area approx. 8 hectares
• 6 hectare woody weed control
• 36,000 native provenance seedlings planted (lower, middle and upper storey)

Biodiversity areas
• 3.4km fencing
• total area approx. 14 hectares
• 3 hectares woody weed control
• 5,500 seedlings planted (remnant vegetation buffers) (lower, middle and upper storey)

Meeting Location South Port Surf Life Saving Club, Weatherald Tce, Port Noarlunga South
  Activity Guide
  Project Summary Vision
To protect, maintain & improve the South Port Noarlunga beach and sand dune system as a safe and diverse environment for the sustainable use and enjoyment of the general community.
Aim
To implement a Dune Management Plan, in conjunction with Council's Coastal Management Plan, that incorporates the key elements of conservation, rehabilitation, enhancement and community ownership.
Key elements include:
- Conservation - to maintain the indigenous character and existing ecosystems of the coastal zone.
- Rehabilitate - to restore the integrity of the degraded Coastal Zone through proactive management.
- Enhancement - to promote and develop an educated awareness, understanding, community ownership and appreciation of this unique fragile public asset.
Success Stories • Identification of problem areas within the dune system requiring cooperative action. This includes repairs to fencing, establishing ramps to enable controlled access, sandboarding issues and removal of weeds and foxes within the dune system.
• Extensive planting of local plant species in the dune system has been a priority, with over 2 000 seedlings being propagated and planted by the group. Over 6 000 plants, derived from a local grower and funded through an Olympic Landcare Program grant, have also been planted by various local schools and members of the community.
• The group is committed to ongoing repair and rehabilitation within the dune and beach area for the long lasting benefit of all users. It also looks to raise community awareness of the area’s extensive diversity of plants and animals.
