When the South Para Biodiversity Project (SPBP) was established in 1999, its overriding aim was to maintain, enhance and restore indigenous biodiversity values and take the biodiversity message to the local community. Now, some seven years later, the Project can look back on a job well done.

Rather than lugging around fencing, seedlings, weed sprayers and the like as part of their efforts to revegetate, rehabilitate, restore and sustainably manage natural resources on both private and public land, an elite group of rural landholders and committed community volunteers instead walked away last week loaded up with certificates, plaques, trophies, property signage and high praise for their valuable work.

Hundreds of woody weeds, including Ash trees, olives, briar rose, olives and poplars, have been removed from the banks of the North Para River in Nuriootpa thanks to a partnership project of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board and the Barossa Council.

The dry state of the lower River Torrens in the western suburbs of Adelaide is not unusual at this time of year, but is another sign of the State’s continuing drought conditions, according Kym Good, General Manager of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board. "The drying out of the lower Torrens is quite normal in February and March every year as we approach the end of summer," said Mr Good.
