Southern Fleurieu Coastal Action Plan & Conservation Priority Study 2007

The Southern Fleurieu Coastal Action Plan and Conservation Priority Study Plan was prepared for the Adelaide & Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resource Management Board, Department of Environment and Heritage, Alexandrina Council, City of Victor Harbor, District Council of Yankalilla, and Goolwa to Wellington LAP.

The report covers the coast between Sellicks Beach and Hindmarsh Island.

The Southern Fleurieu Coastal Action Plan Coastal Action Plan helps set the priorities for the Board’s future coastal on-ground works in the region which will be implemented through the Regional Natural Resources Management Plan.

The goal of the study was to understand and facilitate the conservation, protection and maintenance of the regions' natural coastal resources and to establish conservation priorities and threatening processes for places and areas within the region.

The study used digital maps (GIS - Geographical Information Systems) to collate and analyse and present information retrieved from government and non-government, community groups and local experts.

Early in the project, the Board recognised the need:

  • for a detailed review of the state of the coastal natural resource asset of the region, thus establishing a baseline statement for the region;
  • to examine the threatening processes;
  • to identify opportunities for more effective management at the local scale and to define specific management actions and their priority; and
  • to establish a framework of broad actions and targets to guide the regional community.

A Coastal Action Plan is being developed for the remaining coast in the Adelaide & Mount Lofty Ranges region from Sellicks Beach to Middle Beach for completion in late 2008.

To help implement the Coastal Action Plan, the Adelaide & Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resource Management Board and the District Council of Yankalilla (with support from Alexandrina Council and City of Victor Harbor), have established a Coast, Estuary and Marine Officer.

The Southern Fleurieu Coastal Action Plan and Priority Study is available as a free CD-ROM with interactive digital maps. The Plan can also be viewed on the Yankalilla Council website.
