The Barossa Prescribed Water Resources Area is centred approximately 60 km north-east of Adelaide.
The prescribed water resources include underground water, watercourses and surface water.
The groundwater resources of the Barossa Valley Floor were first prescribed on July 1 1989, followed by the prescription of the North Para River and its tributaries in 1992.
The surfacewater (water flowing over land and captured in farm dams) was prescribed in 1998. In addition, Greenock Creek, which joins the Barossa was prescribed in May 2005.

Draft Water Allocation Released for comment
Every five years the Water Allocation Plan for this area is reviewed to ensure it continues to meet existing needs and those of the future. A new draft water allocation plan for the Barossa Prescribed Water Resources Area has been released for public consultation.
Comments recieved on the draft Barossa Water Allocation Plan are now being reviewed by the Board. It is likely that some additional work will be required before the new plan can be finalised.
The road so far...
The Board undertook a review of the previous plan (December 2000) and determined that a new plan was required. The Board is in the process of preparing a new plan for the Barossa, including Greenock Creek, in association with a local advisory committee.
The first stage of preparing a new plan was the development of a Concept Statement
As part of the process to develop the draft water allocation plan, the Board has prepared a series of discussion papers outline possible policy directions for the Barossa.
