The McLaren Vale PWA covers an area of approximately 320 square kilometres, with the Onkaparinga River forming part of the northern boundary, while much of the south-eastern boundary follows the ridge of the Sellicks Range.
On 17 February 2007, a new Water Allocation Plan (WAP) for the McLaren Vale Prescribed Wells Area was adopted by the Honourable Gail Gago MLC, Minister for Environment and Conservation. This Water Allocation Plan supersedes the previous Water Allocation Plan adopted in November 2000
The McLaren Vale WAP provides the legal framework for the allocation, use and transfer of groundwater, imported water and effluent water in the McLaren Vale PWA.
The McLaren Vale WAP was developed in accordance with the Natural Resources Management Act 2004 (formerly the Water Resources Act 1997).
The McLaren Vale WAP aims to ensure that the groundwater resource is allocated and managed in a sustainable manner. To do this, the McLaren Vale WAP:
- Identifies the amount of groundwater that can be allocated and extracted per year;
Defines criteria for the development of Aquifer Storage and Recovery schemes;
Encourages efficient use of water for irrigation purposes; and
Provides water for groundwater dependent ecosystems within the prescribed area.

A Resource Condition Summary is now available for the underground water resources of the McLaren Vale Prescribed Wells Area. This document contains a summary of the latest trends in groundwater levels and rates of extraction across the McLaren Vale Prescribed Wells Area (PWA) focussing on trends between January 2004 and December 2007.
